We left Madrid by car towards San Sebastian, someone told us that it would be better to take the highway to Vitoria and then San Sebastian, but highways and me are not best friends, unless I am in a hurry, so we made our way towards Pamplona, then we crossed the border to the French Basque country and then to San Sebastian, Guipuzcoa, Spain. It took us about 6 hours –without stopovers- to arrive to Sare, our first stop. The better way to prepare your travel is to take a look to www.viamichelin.com, a very complete guide which offers you route planners, driving directions etc., even calculates your toll and fuel costs, plus hotels and restaurants in case you are hungry or sleepy. Heading north we stopped at Pamplona to have lunch, and continued our way to Sare.
I strongly recommend not to take the highway, may be the quickest route, but you will miss the beautiful views of the N 121A. This road skirts the Bidasoa River, a paradise for fishing lovers in the province of Navarre. Unique forests of chestnut trees, oak trees, beech trees and small villages make the landscape breathtaking. After traveling across the French Basque country we crossed the French border and arrived to Hondarribia (Fuenterrabia) our second stop. From Hondarribia to San Sebastian, our last stop, you may take the highway or make your way across the Mount Jaizkibel, between Hondarribia and Pasaia. Be aware that if you choose the Jaizkibel, it must be on a clear day, no clouds nor fog, otherwise it turns out to be a very unpleasant experience, as it happened to be to me. I managed to convince my husband to drive across the Jaizkibel, we would have lunch on a wonderful place and we would enjoy the wonderful views, for the mount runs parallel to the coast. Twenty minutes after we began to climb, a thick fog began to cover the road, and five minutes later we saw nothing but fog around us, the road disappeared, the cliffs at our right were a growing threat, suddenly we heard a sound of bells, and a flock of goats materialized in front of us, adventurous travel, some may think, not recommended I may say, but, take the chance, be prepared, only on a clear day and it’s worth it.
